Fairlies

‘Fairlies’, it seems, can refer to a type of yacht, a double ended steam locomotive, or a place. Or it could just be someone’s name. In fact, this song by Grian Chatten is about none of these; it’s about the unfairness of life.

The fairies get their fingers and they spin your wheel
And they make you look at sunshine that your skin will never feel

But it’s not a gloomy song. Instrumentally, it rocks along with the carefree exuberance of youth.

Grian Chatten is best known as the vocalist with the Dublin based post-punk band, Fontaines D.C. (Wikipedia). Fairlies is a taster from his forthcoming solo album, Chaos for the Fly, due for release on 30th June. To the Crotchety ear, Fontaines D.C. can feel like paddling a small boat on a choppy sea, but Fairlies sails through smoother, calmer waters. The Crotchety Crew is really looking forward to hearing the full album.
