Three Movements

Hop, skip and jump. Three kinds of movement. But probably not what Sonar had in mind when they recorded their Three Movements album.

Sonar is a quartet with a traditional rock band line-up: two guitars (Stephan Thelen, Bernhard Wagner), bass (Christian Kuntner) and drums (Manuel Pasquinelli). Their output, though, is nothing like that of the typical rock band of the seventies. Perhaps the best description of Sonar‘s music is “minimalist groove”. With little in the way of melody and harmony, it relies almost entirely on texture and flow. And it feels like the tender caress of a soft woollen scarf in a warm breeze.

Discogs lists 10 albums by Sonar. A Flaw of Nature was released in 2012 and there has been a steady stream over the years since then. Three Movements is their latest; it stepped into the limelight just last month. For this album, the Sonar quartet was augmented by David Torn (Polytown) and J. Peter Schwalm. Together, they have crafted a sonic ASMR trigger. Listen, and enjoy the tingles.
