Malice in Wonderland

The malicious Queen of Hearts

It seems to me that almost all committees are dysfunctional. As soon as you get more than 3 or 4 people together round a table, opinions fly across the room in all directions, and the substance of the discussion dies in the crossfire. In theory, the meeting comes to a consensus; in practice, a compromise is reached that leaves everyone disgruntled, or the topic is kicked into the long grass.

That thought (in somewhat starker form) prompted this choice of a track by the Australian jazz-fusion band, Crossfire, for my track-of-the-week.

A track from Crossfire‘s 1980 album, East of Where.

The band has a useful entry on Wikipedia, which tells us that Crossfire was formed in Sydney in 1974, was active until 1991, and recorded five studio albums during that period. East of Where, released in 1980, is the third of those studio albums and the only one on Spotify.

The band’s musical style sits at the heart of jazz-fusion, cheek by jowl with Weather Report. The creative spark might not quite match that of the Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter outfit, but the musicianship is equally outstanding. My only criticism is that each track on the East of Where album sounds much like the others.

I’d have added a photo of the Crossfire band if I could find one, but image searches only deliver pictures of cars, video games and TV shows. So, instead, here’s another illustration of “Malice in Wonderland”.

That white rabbit looks as though it could devour a horse!

P.S. Discogs has this picture of the band.
