Gånglåt i femtakt

“Walking song in five beats” (Google Translate)

This track came up in my Release Radar recently, and it pleased the ears.

It’s from an album called Åtråvärld, released late last year by the Swedish band Å. They are:

  • Joel Öhlund – vocals, guitar/bass guitar
  • Milovan Fredriksson – guitar/bass guitar, backup vocals
  • Erik Wallin – drums

The trio augments their sound on the album with guest musicians on sax, flute, violin and synthesisers. It’s all put together neatly to form a complete package of progressive rock songs with a stimulating groove. All in all, it’s an excellent example of Scandi-prog.

Going back to the Radar, I was curious enough to ask Google Translate what the title means, and the answer it gave was “Walking song in five beats”. This got me thinking about other songs in a 5-time. A simple search brought to light a playlist of more than 150 well-known pieces spanning the full breadth of popular music styles. Here’s a personal selection from that list:

Tunes in a 5-time (from a selection of 150+ in this Spotify playlist)

A surprisingly large proportion of the tracks in the full list were already marked with a Crotchety ‘like’. And quite a few sit among my very favourites. I think I must be a quintuple-time lover. (A philquin, perhaps?)

Now I’m going out for some exercise. I think I’ll try a brisk walk with a 5-time gait.
