Longing

Longing for … what?, I wonder.

It’s been exceptionally wet in some parts of the UK for the past couple of months. Many of us here have been longing for the rain to stop. But Lis Wessberg is from Denmark. I have no idea what the weather has been like over there, but the chances are that Wessberg – trombonist, composer and arranger of jazz tunes – had something else in mind when she wrote the three songs on her Longing EP.

A sample track from Lis Wessberg’s forthcoming album, In the Wake of Blue.

The EP’s title track comes off the starting blocks at a brisk canter and keeps up that pace for nearly four and a half minutes. Soft synthesised wails drift over a stomping bass. Wessberg’s expressive trombone and Veronika Rud’s tender voice take it in turns to sail overhead. The melody swings uncertainly, at once joyous and fearful. The lyrics speak of desire and anticipation.

If you call me, I will wait forever.

Well, Veronika, I’m tempted, but to be brutally honest, I’m really just longing for the rain to stop. Sorry, my love!
