Sitting with the Fish

At The Deep, a famous tourist attraction in Kingston Upon Hull, UK.

The biggest fish tank I have ever seen is the one pictured above. It’s the size of a small church, and there’s a glass tunnel that runs through it. All kinds of fish swim beside you and above you, as you walk through. There are benches by the walkway, too, where you can sit and contemplate the wonders of nature.

Whether it was this that inspired Minor Dents to write a song called Sitting with the Fish I can’t say but, judging by the hushed, awestruck faces of the others when I was in that tunnel, it would certainly fit the trance-like mood of the human visitors. What the fish would have thought of it, though, is anyone’s guess.

The title track from Minor Dents‘ debut EP, released 23rd January 2026.

The best style tag for this track, and the others on the EP, is ‘kosmiche’. Harmonically, it’s very simple – little more than a drone – but it marches steadily along and, like a shark, it never stops moving. The overall effect is calming and spiritual. It’s a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The band is a trio with an unusual mix of skills:

  • Ryan Bollard: drums and clarinet
  • Holly Finch: vocals, bass and electric guitar
  • Al Strachan: synth, electronics, cornet and vocals

They have concerts booked in Brighton on 22nd March and 2nd April, and they are actively looking for more opportunities to play for you. If you have an arts centre with spare dates near you, send them an email (the address is on their website) and say I sent you. They don’t know me, but you can pass on a link to this post by way of introduction.

The Deep offers sleepovers for organised groups of children. Their website mentions Brownies, Cubs, Rainbows and Beavers, in particular. So, if your grandson is a cub scout, you could send him along for an unforgettable birthday treat. Then, if someone asks you where he is tonight, you can truthfully say, “He sleeps with the fishes”.
