Readers of this blog will, no doubt, have heard of Emerson Lake and Palmer‘s version of Mussorgsky’s piano suite, Pictures At An Exhibition. And you may be wondering what Katsushika Hokusai’s painting, The Great Wave, has to do with it. The answer, unsurprisingly, is not a lot. You see, the Tim Kliphuis Trio has curated an imaginary art exhibition featuring works by Van Gogh, Hokusai, Klimt and New York artist Georgia O’Keefe, which they used to inspire their latest album of gypsy jazz tunes.
Much like Mussorgsky’s work, their Pictures At An Exhibition contains eight pieces that illustrate one of the paintings, plus three interludes portraying a visitor’s promenade through the gallery.
The band is currently on tour in the U.S. and they start the U.K. leg on 12th March. Much to my surprise, they will be in Quorn Village Hall on 22nd March, less than 15 minutes from the Crotchety blogging desk. Plans are afoot to gather some friends and get tickets. It’s undoubtedly an opportunity not to be missed.
