Black Light Syndrome

Sitting in a backwater of my CD collection, there’s an album called Situation Dangerous by the ‘supergroup’, Bozzio Levin Stevens. I don’t remember how I acquired it now, but the mental index card has it down as heavy/prog rock, and the attached sticker says, “a very pleasant surprise”. Just recently, Cirdecsongs, brought to my attention the debut album by the BLS trio and rated it the better of their two releases. And, you know, he is absolutely right!

The debut album by Bozzio Levin Stevens, released July 1997.

The Black Light Syndrome album contains 1 hour and 7 minutes of heavy, progressive and art rock. It is all instrumental, mostly improvised and then lightly overdubbed. It is unusual in that it contains passages of Flamenco acoustic guitar that light up the sound like the fluorescent scales on a scorpion’s tail under a U.V. lamp. I am reminded of the heavy metal Flamenco guitarists, Rodrigo y Gabriela. I still don’t quite understand the connection between Spanish acoustic guitar music and heavy rock. But, as both those artists have demonstrated, it can work beautifully!
